App-controlled toys: what actually works over Bluetooth

Two kinds of app control

Bluetooth connects the toy directly to a phone within range — typically the same room, sometimes the next room through a wall. If the phone leaves, control stops.

App-to-app pairs the toy to one phone which relays commands through the internet to another phone anywhere. That is what makes long-distance use possible, and it depends on both phones having a connection.

What range really means

Bluetooth range in a flat is shortened by walls, doors and bodies. Manufacturers quote optimistic numbers. Assume one room, and be pleasantly surprised if you get more.

If the point is a partner controlling it from another city, you need app-to-app, not Bluetooth.

The three questions worth asking

• Does the toy keep working if the phone disconnects? Good ones hold their last setting rather than stopping dead.
• Does it work without the app at all? A device with buttons as well as an app is far more useful than one that is app-only.
• What happens when the app updates? Cheap devices sometimes stop pairing. Ask before you buy.

We stock two app-controlled items. Both pair over Bluetooth with the app described in the box, and both have onboard controls so you are not stranded if the phone is elsewhere.

We do not claim long-distance control on anything we sell, because none of it is app-to-app. If that is what you need, say so on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether we have it.
