Before you hand the courier the cash: what to check in 60 seconds

Cash on delivery means you pay at the door. Here is what to look at before you hand over the money in the UAE — the outer box, the seal, the item itself, and the one situation where you should not pay.

Why this check exists at all

Cash on delivery is the only payment method that puts you in control at the last moment. There is no chargeback to file and no card issuer to appeal to — the leverage you have is entirely in the thirty seconds before you hand the money over.

Most people in the UAE do not take those thirty seconds. They take the box, say thank you and close the door, then open it. That is fine 95% of the time and expensive the other 5%.

The 60-second check, in order

  • The outer box looks intact. Dents, water marks or a re-taped seam are worth a second look. Ask the courier to wait.
  • The waybill matches what you ordered. It should show your name and address and nothing about the contents.
  • Open the box in front of the courier. You are allowed to. Couriers in the UAE are used to it and it takes a moment.
  • Count the pieces. If the listing said four pieces and there are three, that is a conversation to have now, not after the courier leaves.
  • Look for damage on the product itself. A cracked base or a torn seal on a soft item is a manufacturing fault, and it is much easier to resolve while the delivery is still in progress.

When you should not pay

There is one situation where the right answer is to hand the box back: the item is visibly not the one you ordered. Not "I don't like the colour" — if the colour was never promised, that is on you — but a different model, a different size to the one printed on the page, or an obviously used item.

When that happens, tell the courier you are refusing delivery and message us the same day. A refused parcel comes back and we sort it out. Paying first and arguing later is a slower road to the same place.

What not to worry about

Nobody at the door knows what is in the parcel. The box carries no product or brand names and the waybill carries only the courier's details and your address. That is not a courtesy, it is the design.

If you live in a shared building, two things help: put the reception or security desk in the checkout notes, and keep the WhatsApp thread open so you can move the delivery window if you are out.

Questions

Can I open the parcel before paying? +

Yes. Ask the courier to wait while you open it. Checking the contents before paying is the whole point of cash on delivery.

What if the item is faulty when I open it? +

Message us the same day on WhatsApp. A faulty device is replaced or refunded in full, delivery included.

What if I am not home? +

The courier calls before arriving. You can rearrange the window or ask for it to be left with a reception desk.
