BDSM kits: what is actually in the box, and what to check

What is usually inside

• Wrist restraints — the piece most people use first
• Ankle restraints — usually the same design, sometimes longer straps
• A body strap or harness — connects the two, or goes around the torso
• A collar — often with a leash
• Rope — cotton or a soft synthetic, for ties the straps cannot do
• A paddle or flogger — the piece most likely to stay in the box

What to check before anything is worn

Release speed. Every piece must come off in one movement, including under tension. Test each buckle and each strap before the first session, not during it.

Adjustment range. A strap that only fits one body size is a strap that will be uncomfortable on someone.

Metal against skin. Look for hardware that sits against the wrist or ankle. Soft-touch strapping with the metal kept away from skin is worth paying for.

Do you need the whole kit

Usually not first. A single adjustable strap at AED 150 tells you whether the idea appeals in practice, and there is far less to learn.

A ten-piece kit at AED 220 is good value as a second step, once you know you want more than one piece.

Looking after it

Wipe straps with a damp cloth and let them dry completely before storing — damp straps are what cause the material to break down. Store flat rather than coiled tightly, and keep metal away from damp bathrooms.
