How to tell a real online store from a scam, in five minutes

Five checks anyone can do before paying for an online order in the UAE — reviews, payment method, delivery terms, contact details and the claim that matters most.

1. Do they take card payment at all?

This sounds backwards, but it is the fastest filter. A seller with no card processing at all is either very new or not able to get a merchant account — and in this category, the second is more common.

Cash on delivery is the safer option for you anyway: you see the parcel before you pay, and there is no card number to leak.

2. Is there a real person behind the number?

Message the WhatsApp number before you order and ask one specific question — a sizing question, a delivery window, anything that needs a real answer.

A shop that replies properly within a few hours is a shop with someone behind it. A shop that sends a catalogue link and nothing else is a reseller.

3. Check whether the reviews are real

A brand-new store with fifty five-star reviews written in the same week is not a good sign. Look for reviews that mention specific problems, dates spread over months, and at least one that is not perfect.

Trustpilot and Google store ratings are harder to fake at volume than an on-site review widget.

4. Read the delivery terms, not the marketing

Does it say exactly what happens if nobody is home? Is there a stated returns window? A store that answers both without being asked is a store that has thought about it.

Vague delivery promises — "fast delivery" with no number — are worth ignoring.

5. Ask them to make it awkward

Ask a question the answer to which is bad for them. "Can I return it if I open it?" is a good one — a straight answer is reassuring even when the answer is "no, for hygiene reasons".

A seller who tells you the limitation is usually a seller who will tell you the truth later.

Questions

Is cash on delivery safer than paying online? +

Generally yes — you inspect the parcel before paying and there is no card data involved.

What is the biggest red flag? +

No contact method other than a form, plus reviews that are all five stars and all recent.

Should I worry if a store has no reviews yet? +

A new store with no reviews is normal. The problem is a new store with many identical glowing reviews.
