How to bring up toys with a partner without it going badly
A practical approach to raising the subject with a partner — when to bring it up, what to actually say, and the two ways this conversation usually goes wrong.
Timing does most of the work
Not during an argument, not immediately after sex, and not as a surprise. The best window is a relaxed, neutral moment — a quiet evening, a conversation that is already about the two of you.
Raising it as a question rather than an announcement is the whole difference. "I read something, what do you think" lands very differently from "I bought something".
Say what you want, not what is missing
"I'd like to try something new with you" is easy to hear. "I'm bored" or "you're not enough" are the same request wrapped in an insult, and they will end the conversation.
If there is something you want more of, frame it as a direction you want to move in together rather than a gap in what exists.
The two ways this goes wrong
- Buying it first. A surprise purchase puts the other person in a position where they have to react to something already decided. Ask first, buy second.
- Making it a test. If the answer is "not interested", that has to be a complete answer that does not become a recurring issue.
If they say yes
Start with something that makes no assumptions — an external vibrator rather than something internal, one button rather than an app, quiet rather than powerful.
Pick it together if you can. Choosing is half the fun and it removes the guesswork about what the other person actually wants.

Questions
What if they are not interested? +
Then that is the answer, and it does not need revisiting every few weeks. Ask once, listen properly.
Should I buy something first? +
Ask first. A purchase before the conversation puts pressure on the other person to agree.
What is a safe first choice? +
An external vibrator with one button — small, quiet, and nothing that assumes experience.
