How to read a product page when the size is missing

The number that gets left out

On an adult product page, the headline figure is almost always the overall length. The figure that actually decides whether something works for you is the diameter, and often the insertable length — and those are the two most likely to be missing.

Overall length includes a suction base, a handle or a motor housing. A product described as 21 cm may have 15 cm that counts. That is not a trick specific to this market, but this market has less pressure to correct it.

Working it out from what is printed

If only a total length is given, look at the product photo next to something with a known size — a hand, a bottle, a battery. It is crude but it catches the biggest errors: the difference between a 13 cm and a 21 cm item is obvious.

If two versions of the same mould exist, the size printed on one often applies to both. And if a weight is given, that is a real signal: a 190 g silicone dildo and an 810 g one at similar lengths are telling you something about density and thickness.

Three questions worth asking before you pay

Any seller who can answer these quickly is a seller who knows the stock. Any seller who cannot is a reseller working from a supplier catalogue, which is a different kind of risk.

• What is the diameter at the widest point? Not the length. Diameter.
• What does the pack say about the material? "Silicone" and "silicone-like" are not the same claim.
• Does it come apart for cleaning? On anything with a motor, this matters more than waterproofing.
