Silicone, TPE, ABS or metal? A body-safe materials guide
What silicone, TPE, ABS and metal actually mean on a product page, how each behaves, which lubricant is safe with each, and how to clean them properly.
Silicone
Non-porous, so it does not hold bacteria, and it lasts for years if you look after it. It can be boiled to sterilise, though a toy cleaner is usually enough.
It cannot be made as soft as TPE, and it is more expensive. Silicone toys must not be used with silicone-based lubricant — use water-based.
TPE and TPR
Soft, stretchy, skin-like, and the material behind almost every stroker and moulded body piece. Cheaper than silicone and much softer.
It is porous, which means it holds onto residue and can get tacky over time. Wash it after every use, dry it completely, and dust it with renewing powder to keep the surface soft. TPE has a shorter life than silicone — that is the trade-off.
ABS plastic
The hard, smooth plastic used for device bodies, handles and control panels. Non-porous, rigid, and it does not react with lubricant.
Usually the internal parts are what matter, so check what the insertable part is made of rather than the shell.
Metal
Used for plugs and rings — typically aluminium or stainless steel. Non-porous, very easy to clean, and it holds temperature, which people either love or find cold at first.
Run it under warm water before use if you do not like the cold.
Which lubricant to use
Water-based lubricant is safe with every material we sell. That is the whole rule.
Silicone-based lubricant lasts longer but will break down silicone toys. Oil-based lubricant is not compatible with condoms.
Cleaning, in four lines
- Rinse with warm water and a pH-neutral toy cleaner after every use, or use warm water alone for silicone and metal.
- Air dry completely before it goes back in a drawer — moisture is what causes problems, not use.
- Store separately. Soft TPE can react with other soft materials if they sit against each other.
- Replace TPE items when the surface starts to feel sticky even after washing.
Questions
Is TPE safe? +
Yes, it is body-safe and used across the industry. It is more porous than silicone, so it needs washing after every use and has a shorter lifespan.
Can I use silicone lubricant with a silicone toy? +
No. Silicone lubricant degrades silicone toys. Use water-based lubricant with every material we sell.
How often should I replace a toy? +
Silicone and metal last for years with proper care. TPE items should be replaced once the surface stays tacky after washing, or if it develops tears.
