Butt plug sizes: how to choose the first one
How to choose a butt plug by diameter, base and material, when to move up a size, and why the flared base matters more than the length.
Start with diameter
A butt plug is measured by insertable length and maximum diameter. The diameter at the widest point is what determines how comfortable the step feels.
Choose a diameter you can already manage, not the size you hope to reach. A smaller plug that stays comfortable is more useful than a larger one that makes you stop.
The base is not optional
Every plug needs a base wider than the widest part of the insertable section. A narrow neck is fine; a narrow base is not.
A flared base stops the toy from passing inside and makes removal controllable. Decorative bases are only useful if they are genuinely wider than the body of the plug.
Sets versus single plugs
A set gives you several diameters, but you do not have to use every piece. Start with the smallest and move up only when it feels easy.
A single plug is enough if you already know your comfortable size. A set makes more sense if you are new or want to progress gradually.
Material and surface
Silicone is non-porous, easy to clean and a sensible default. Soft TPE feels softer but is porous, so it needs complete drying and a shorter replacement cycle.
A smooth surface is easier to insert than a heavily textured one. Texture can be added later; the first plug should be easy to control.
Lubricant and wear time
Use water-based lubricant and apply it to both the plug and the body. Reapply if the surface starts to feel dry.
Start with a short session and remove the plug if there is pain. A plug is not a test of endurance, and a longer wear time is not a better result.
When to move up
Move up when the current diameter feels easy, the base stays comfortable and you are not relying on distraction to get through it. If the next size feels sharp or painful, stay where you are.
Clean the plug before and after use, dry it completely and store it away from other soft materials.

Questions
What size butt plug should a beginner choose? +
Start with the smallest diameter in a graduated set, or a single plug you can insert comfortably. Do not choose by length alone.
Do all butt plugs need a flared base? +
Yes. The base must be wider than the insertable section so the plug cannot pass inside.
How long can I wear a plug? +
Start with a short session and stop if there is pain. Comfort and easy removal matter more than duration.
