Travel toys: what survives a weekend bag, a hotel room and a shared suitcase

Travel lock is the feature people forget

A toy without a travel lock can switch on inside a bag. That is annoying in a suitcase and much worse in a shared one. If the listing does not mention a lock, assume there is not one and pack the toy in a separate hard case.

Some toys lock by holding two buttons for a few seconds. Test the lock at home before you pack, and test that you can unlock it again. A toy that is locked and cannot be unlocked is a different kind of travel problem.

Battery and charging

A short trip does not need a long battery life, but it does need a charged battery at the start. Charge the toy the night before, and carry the cable if the trip is longer than two nights.

Check whether the charger is USB-C, magnetic or a proprietary connector. A proprietary cable left at home can make the toy useless for the rest of the trip. Keep the cable in the same pouch as the toy.

If you are flying, check the airline's rules for lithium batteries. A toy with an internal battery usually needs to stay in hand luggage if it cannot be removed.

The forms that pack well

• Bullet or mini vibrator — small, light, easy to put in a hard case
• Compact massager — useful for shoulders after a flight, still packable
• Manual pocket stroker — no battery, but needs complete drying before packing
• Small suction toy — compact, but the opening needs protection from dust and lint

The forms that do not

A full-size wand is long and heavy. A thrusting machine is bulky and noisy. A torso or full-body piece is not a weekend-bag item at all.

If you want one toy for both home and travel, a compact external vibrator is the most flexible choice. If you want a toy specifically for the trip, prioritise the lock, the cable and the case over the number of settings.

Cleaning away from home

Pack a small bottle of toy cleaner or use mild unscented soap. Rinse with lukewarm water, not hot water, and dry the toy completely before it goes back in the case. A damp toy in a closed bag is the fastest way to ruin a material.

Hotel bathrooms often have only a small sink and a hand towel. A microfibre cloth takes up almost no space and dries a toy much faster than a thick towel.
