Using a vibrator for the first time: what to expect
What a first session with a vibrator actually involves — where to start, how long to use it, why the lowest setting is usually the right one, and the two things that surprise people.
Start lower than you think
Almost every first session goes the same way: the lowest setting feels like nothing, so the setting goes up, and then it is too much. Vibration builds — what feels mild for ten seconds often does not after a minute.
Start on the lowest setting and stay there longer than feels necessary. You can always go up; you cannot undo an overshoot except by starting over.
Over clothing is a legitimate first step
You do not have to start with direct contact. Over underwear or a layer of fabric is how a lot of people begin, and it takes the edge off both the sensation and the nerves.
Work down a layer at a time if and when it feels right. There is no schedule to keep to.
Ten minutes is enough
A first session does not need to be long. Ten to fifteen minutes is typical, and stopping early is fine.
Vibration can leave the area feeling numb or oversensitive after a while — if that happens, stop rather than pushing through. It settles within a few minutes.
The two things that surprise people
- How strong small devices are. A bullet concentrates the motor in a small head, so it feels much stronger than its size suggests.
- How much the shape matters. A slightly different angle changes the sensation more than a different setting does.
Afterwards
Wipe it down or rinse it if it is water-resistant, dry it fully, and put it somewhere out of sunlight. Charge it before long storage rather than leaving the battery flat.

Questions
How long should a first session last? +
Ten to fifteen minutes. Stopping early is fine — there is no target.
Should I use it over clothing? +
Yes, if that feels easier. Work down a layer at a time as you get used to the sensation.
Why does it feel numb afterwards? +
Prolonged vibration can temporarily desensitise the area. It settles in a few minutes; stop when it starts rather than pushing through.
